Conservation, recycling, standards of living, etc. are often discussed by groups such as this one, and even in our national media. But it is striking how seldom there is mention of one of the primary root causes of most of the ecological/environmental problems we face–overpopulation. The individual consumption by one person added to the population of the U.S. wipes out many times more resources than any one of us can save through a lifetime of conservation, recycling, living a low-impact lifestyle, etc. We need to work toward making society aware of this. It needs to be a central part of public discourse.
Too often the public reaction to the mention of population issues is fear that draconian, mandatory regulation of child numbers (China) are what is being advocated. But there are many alternatives to such drastic steps. The first thing that absolutely must be accomplished is to make population a standard part of the sustainability discussion. Awareness is the first, and most vital, part of the solution.

I want to congratulate SOLV for finally beginning the footwork necessary to begin to understand and formulate the means to be prepared for the future. And the future is NOW. Patsy and I have been working at our own sustainability for 18 years now. We are at the point of wanting to expand to provide as much as we can to our fellow Long Valley residents. Needless to say, growing in this climate is beyond challenging. Attaining true sustainability may be difficult on a community scale. What it will take is the community adopting and embracing a new way of life. As a society, we have become individuals, community has disapeared. We do not depend on, or hardly know our neighbors. Most of us have taken our lifestyle for granted, with little thought of how fragile our systems have become.
I’m looking forward to becoming involved with SOLV. By being part of the solution, we begin a new work, and build the future we want.
See you at the dinner. I look forward to meeting everyone.
